Beyond The Trophy: Get to know Colgate Chapter leader, return specialist and defensive back Will Gruber
Each week during the college football season we will feature a player who is an officer of an Uplifting Athletes Chapter for our Beyond the Trophy series.
Colgate Chapter leader
Senior DB/KR No. 3 from Hermitage, Pennsylvania
Get To Know Will Gruber: The combination defensive back and kick returner for the Raiders was a 2020-21 All Patriot League First Team selection as a return specialist and a second team pick as a defensive back. Will volunteered to become a chapter leader in 2021 following a year where the pandemic prevented Uplifting Athletes from holding chapter events and activities. He attended the virtual Leadership Development Conference in early 2021 to prepare for his instrumental role in helping the Colgate Chapter continue its mission to inspire the Rare Disease Community with hope. A fourth-year player, Will made his college debut in 2018, has appeared in 24 games with four starts, has 27 tackles, one interception and 41 kickoff returns for a 21.8 yard average.
What is your most memorable experience as a college football player?
GRUBER: Making two big tackles as a freshman in the NCAA playoffs.
What drove you to get involved with Uplifting Athletes?
GRUBER: Hearing my teammates talk about the importance of Uplifting Athletes and wanting to continue that connection with our team.
What have you learned from your experience with Uplifting Athletes?
GRUBER: The impact Uplifting Athletes has on people in need is truly amazing. To be a part of something so important is a great feeling.
Who is your favorite NFL player and why?
GRUBER: Minkah Fitzpatrick from the Pittsburgh Steelers. The way he plays is unmatched. He is not often put atop the league but he is consistently the best safety in the game. He does not need the pat on the back when he outperforms those around him.
If you could play another sport, what would it be and why?
GRUBER: I would either run track or play golf. I ran track in high school and it was always so fun. I love sprinting. Golf has always been one of my favorite things to do in my free time and when I am done with my football career, I plan on playing a lot of golf.
Tell us something about yourself that most people don’t know?
GRUBER: As much as I love to play football, there were multiple times growing up when I questioned my love for the game. My teammates were always the ones that brought me back because of their support and trust in me to get the job done. I was not going to let them down.
