Rare Diseases

A rare disease affects fewer than 200,000 Americans and typically lacks financial incentive to make and market new treatments. However, the National institutes of Health (NIH) have identified over 7,000 different rare diseases affecting a total of nearly 30 million Americans.
The following list is a sample of rare disease taken from the NIH database of Rare Diseases and Related Terms:
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
- Alzheiners Disease
- Brain Tumors
- Cancer, Colon
- Cancer, Kidney
- Cancer, Pancreatic
- Cancer, Thyroid

- Cystic Fibrosis (typically a childhood disease)
- Epilepsy (seizures)

- Leukemia (typically a childhood disease)
